The question that Dirk Vandewalle posted in his After Gaddafi article was the very same question that everyone asks: “How does a country recover from 40 years of destruction by an unchallenged tyrant?”
Vandewalle’s knowledge of Libya and Muammar Gaddafi provided enough background for the readers to understand why Libya became the country that it was during the 2011 uprising. It was able to explore the 40 years of Gadaffi’s regime as Libya’s most politically – powerful man very briefly, but it achieved its purpose of covering the highlights that bear significance to the then present condition of the country. Furthermore, he established a balance between the flaws of Gaddafi’s regime and the ground through which its people and next leaders can stand on to help their country out of the chaos that almost destroyed it. The ways may not be practical, or something concrete that can be carried out right away, but it gave gravity to the situation. It implicitly assumed that Libya’s recovery will not be easy, but it’s possible.
