Blue is a color; it can be a feeling. And for Alice Walker, it is also a horse’s name. Am I Blue? is one of the pieces in her book entitled Living in the World: Selected Writings. In this story, “Walker questions the distinctions commonly made between human and animal.”
Walker’s description of Blue’s emotion was the closest that any animal can get to being human. It was by far the most beautiful analogy that I have read. Walker was able to stir in me a feeling of compassion for this different breed of nature. She was able to achieve that provocative question that she originally wanted to leave her readers. It was a well – written exposition that leads to the convergence of humans and animals. She also knows how to draw big stories from small experiences.
If you happen to read the story, you might also ask yourself the same question: Am I Blue?
