While society looks up to men because of their toughness, it stereotypes ladies as “nice”, or “ladylike” – the kind of descriptions that really don’t need a dictionary for you to get the meaning.
Maybe, the characteristics that make men “men” can also be the same thing that can make us (women) “women”. Weird, right? But for Barbara Ehrenreich, in her essay What I’ve Learned From Men, the toughness of men is something that we should maybe learn to do ourselves. It does not really mean that we should also be tough in the name of gender equality. Her experience says it – we must be tough so that those people who treat us like we’re so vulnerable or disadvantaged, for that matter, will think otherwise. It is also a way for us to carry with us that self – esteem wherever we go.
Being tough is something that I did not learn myself; it was a trait that I learned from a woman who learned something from men.
